In Her Own Words
"Imagine being given $20,000 to make a difference. This time, my volunteer work was not limited to helping for just a day or an event. I was a decision-maker. Selected as a member of my county's Girls' Advisory Board, I struggled with allocating money among ten deserving non-profits that applied for grants.
Site visits made me look beyond organizations' names to try to understand what causes, and what (temporarily and permanently) fixes, the complex issues they target. I realized there were different ways to look at every option. Should the money be granted for prevention or dealing with consequences? I not only had to search within myself to tackle these questions, but also the whole Board had to reach a consensus.
The process was both frustrating and rewarding. I saw that $20,000, or even any amount of money, could not fix all the problems, but it was a start."
-Christine, 12th grade, Girls Advisory Board member
